About
Theory of Gnomage…it’s a Gnome mage blog, right? Hmmm…Theory of Gnomage…sounds like Theory of Knowledge…it’s a philosophy blog, right? The answer is…both! Mages, especially Gnome mages, are intellectuals/scholars/philosophers after all.
What to expect from this blog:
Lots of Abstractions
We will concentrate on theory rather than particulars. I’ve always been a fan of the abstract and the esoteric. A zoomed out view allows us to see how all the pieces fit together. Understanding on a theoretical level gives us a deeper understanding and provides us more robust and long term knowledge. For example, if we memorize the multiplication table, we will only ever know how to multiply numbers up to 12. But if we understand what multiplication is and how to do it, then we can multiply any two random numbers. If theory makes you uncomfortable, fear not. I will try to bring the theory down to earth using “real world” Azerothian examples. Taming the abstraction beast is one of the goals of this blog and one that I intend to get better at as I go along. If something seems difficult to understand, it’s my fault. The explanation is bad. Your feedback on things you don’t understand is invaluable because it helps me understand how you are not understanding and helps me craft better explanations. Also, I’m not always right and I don’t know everything, so feedback on corrections and additions are also very welcome.
The Meaning of Life
So many times in my journeys in Azeroth and while reading forums, blogs and blog comments, I’ve seen so many upset people. So many times, I’ve thought, “If only I could talk to them and show them a different way of looking at the situation.”
Beyond Azeroth
The topics we will examine in the context of Azeroth also have their applications in the real world. The sources for topics are also often real world topics. Another major goal of this blog is to be a gateway to learning about the world we live in and hopefully promote interest in learning in general.
Silliness
Some posts will just be me being creative and silly. I don’t think anybody minds a little humour!
Magey Stuff
This is, after all a mage blog. I will focus more on the idiosyncrasies of magedom and open-ended questions like, “What does it mean to be a mage?”
What to not expect from this blog:
- Constantly updated news about the latest and greatest.
- Detailed how-to guides – I won’t be writing many (if any at all) painstakingly detailed references or how-to guides because I’m lazy there are already many excellent blogs out there that have this covered.
I am a Gnome. I am a mage. And this is my blog.
